FAQ

  • Do I need to remove my old attic insulation before installing new attic insulation?

Attic insulation can be removed before installing new insulation however, it is not necessary. Our insulation experts will usually retrofit your attic insulation meaning we will simply add more insulation to your existing insulation. If there are issues with mold and other hazards, chances are we will have to remove the insulation. This is rare, and we will help you determine if this type of action is necessary.

  • Do I need a radiant barrier if I have a lot of insulation in my attic?
Regardless of the amount of insulation you may have in your attic, a radiant barrier will allow you to save money on your energy bills and keep your home comfortable. Believe it or not, you can save around 20% on your energy bills with a radiant barrier in your attic.
  • Where do I install a radiant barrier?
The experts at Attic Pros will staple it under the rafters of your attic. The radian barrier will help trap heat from escaping your attic space.
  • How long will it take for Attic Pros to install insulation in my attic?
Most homes that we insulate can be finished in one day. Our goal is to have your home insulated and ready to go the day we start the project.
  • What is spray foam insulation made of?
Polyurethane spray foam insulation consists of two main ingredients: isocyanate and polyol. These are often used as insulation for things around your home such as refrigerators, couches, sports equipment, paints, and more.
  • What is unique about spray foam insulation?
Spray foam sticks to what it is applied to which forms a continuous air barrier. It sticks to any wall no matter how contoured it may be. Spray foam’s air stopping properties are unique in the fact that another form of insulation does not have to accompany it to make it more effective. Spray foam insulation only needs to be applied once, and you will begin seeing the benefits right away.
  • Is spray foam fire resistant?
Spray foam does contain fire retardants. However, if spray foam is exposed to sufficient heat and flame, it will burn because it is an organic material.
  • How long does spray foam last?
Spray foam will last you a lifetime. Spray foam can be set and then forgotten. It will not hold moisture and is mold resistant, so it will never need to be replaced. You can trust that your spray foam insulation will stay where it is installed until it is physically removed.
  • If my basement is not finished, do I still need foundation insulation?
Yes. Even if you only use your basement for storage purposes and heating and cooling equipment, your basement is thermally connected to rest of your home. This means that energy and conditioned air that escapes your basement will consequently escape your entire home.
  • Can I insulate the floor above my basement as an alternative to foundation insulation?
Yes, this could be an alternative route you take. Keep in mind that if your home’s pipes, ducts, and HVAC system are located in your basement, then you would need to insulate them to prevent them from freezing.
  • Does insulating the exterior of my basement improve energy performance?
If your basement utilizes a number of south-facing windows, exterior insulation could prove to be beneficial if enough sunlight reaches the basement on a daily basis. Otherwise, insulating the exterior may prove to have negligible energy savings.
  • How much energy and money will I save by insulating my basement?
Because of Ottawa’s cold winters and hot summers, it is smart to insulate our basement walls no matter what you use it for. Adding insulation to your basement walls and ceilings can save you up to $300+ a year on your energy bills.

  • Attic Pros in Ottawa was hired to fill insulation in my attic. They were professional and did a great job. Everything was cleaned up after they left. They covered everything up before spraying. Very happy with the results. Thank you.
